On Saturday I held a surgery for local residents at Sale Waterside and on Sunday I attended the Annual Open Day at Wythenshawe Hospital.
On Wednesday I attended the Manchester Womens Aid AGM and fourth birthday celebration.
On Thursday I opened the new Caritas Care adoption and foster centre in Sale.
On Friday met with staff from Wythenshawe Citizens Advice Bureau and held another surgery for local people at Manchester College in Northenden.

On Saturday I attended the successful Garden City Festival event in Wythenshawe Civic Centre. I also took part in a very well attended march in Northenden to draw attention to the state of the Tatton Arms and the Church Inn. In the afternoon I attended a gathering of the Manchester Malayee Cultural Association who were celebrating Onam and later joined an event at Wythenshawe Hospital marking the 25th anniversary of the Ticker Club.
Tuesday was the last day of parliament before a short recess to allow the political parties to hold their annual conferences. During Justice Questions I invited the Justice Secretary to visit the Probation Service on his next visit to Manchester. I also met pupils from Haveley Hay Primary School who were visiting parliament for the day.

Departmental questions in the House of Commons this week included Work and Pensions questions on Monday, during which I urged the Secretary of State to ensure sacked Remploy workers are refunded the emergency tax that has been deducted from their last pay packet. Ministers were held to account on a series of other issues, including the Work Capability Assessments and the implementation of Universal Credit.
On Wednesday, I was in the House of Commons chamber to support Paul Beresford’s Coroners and Justice (Amendment) Bill. This would add possession of prohibited written material about children to the list of offences under Coroners and Justice Act 2009.

Monday was the first sitting of parliament after the summer recess, and I started the week by attending Education Questions. MPs held ministers to account on a range of education issues including the sale of school playing fields, recent GCSE results and the reform of youth services.
I have supported the Disabled Persons' Parking Badges Bill and the Bill Committee met on Wednesday. This is a Private Members Bill brought to the House by Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown. The Bill seeks to give local authorities strong powers to deal with individuals abusing the current scheme, and has Government support. The Bill amends the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 and I took the opportunity to pay tribute to the architect of that legislation, my predecessor, Lord Morris of Manchester.

On Monday at Education Questions I raised concerns that Government ministers are forcing schools to convert to academies against their wishes. On Tuesday during a statement on the health bill I pressed Andrew Lansley for a commitment not to use the current changes in Trafford as an opportunity to privatise the NHS. On Wednesday I attended a meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Landmines followed by Prime Minister’s Questions. On Friday I attended the launch of the new Airport Academy and visited Sale High School to be interviewed for a radio programme to be broadcast at the school. Later I attended the AGM of Trafford Council for Voluntary Service followed by a fundraising event for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On Saturday I joined Shadow Secretary of State for Health, Andy Burnham, and hundreds of others at the “Drop the Bill” event in Manchester.

On Tuesday I attended a seminar at Lambeth Palace on sustainable forest management in Africa followed by a meeting about the NHS in Greater Manchester. On Wednesday I met representatives from the Centre for Mental Health to discuss provision for offenders with mental health problems. On Friday I attended a meeting to press for the proposed Baguley Rail Halt and held an advice surgery at Manchester College. Later I presented awards at the Willow Park Community Stars event. On Saturday I held an advice surgery for local residents at Sale Waterside. On Monday I travelled to Westminster before raising the case of Ryan Girdlestone during the Secretary of State for Justice’s Statement on the Victims and Witnesses Strategy. On Wednesday I met with pupils and teachers from St Joseph’s Primary School who were visiting parliament. On Friday I met with representatives from Transport for Greater Manchester and with residents from Kerscott Road and Pimcroft Way to discuss the ongoing Metrolink works before visiting Manchester Care and Repair. Later I went to Blessed Thomas Holford School to speak to pupils before attending a briefing from Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

On Monday I asked the Minister for Disabled People about the future of the Remploy factory in Wythenshawe at Work and Pension questions then attended the annual Lord Merlyn-Rees Lecture to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. On Tuesday I met representatives of the ONE campaign (an organisation that helps to fight poverty and disease), attended the launch of Peter Hain’s memoirs ‘Outside In’ as well as the inaugural meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Work and the Action for Children’s Parliamentary launch.
On Wednesday I sat on the Delegated Legislation Committee to discuss proposals for a referendum on a directly elected mayor for Manchester. I voted against on the grounds that this is being forced on Mancunians. On Friday I visited Haveley Primary School before meeting with Transport for Greater Manchester to discuss the Northern Hub proposals and holding an advice surger

On Saturday I held an advice surgery for local residents at Wythenshawe Forum. On Monday I travelled to Westminster before meeting with the Foreign Secretary to discuss a constituent’s case. On Wednesday I chaired a meeting of the Manchester Airport Group MP’s Forum and raised concerns regarding Abu Qatada at Prime Minister’s Questions. On Thursday I met representatives of Reprieve to discuss the welfare of a constituent who is in prison abroad. On Friday I had meetings with senior staff at the Manchester Mental Health Trust, Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford Primary Care Trust. I also attended the funeral of former Manchester MP Charles Morris.

On Thursday I took part in a debate in Westminster Hall about the future of Remploy. On Friday I met with Mike Tarry, Manager of the Remploy factory in Wythenshawe and with Joe Doherty of Willow Park Housing Trust before visiting the Community Change Foundation project.

On Monday I made a number of interventions in debates in the House, including asking the Secretary of State for Health to look closely at proposals for a ‘medipark’ close to Wythenshawe Hospital. On Saturday I held one of my five monthly advice surgeries before opening the Christmas Fayre at St Michael’s and All Angel Church in Northern Moor. On Monday morning I joined residents from the Peel Estate to congratulate them on their successful campaign to stop Transport for Greater Manchester building a Metrolink compound on the corner of Brownley Road and Simonsway. On Tuesday I led a Westminster Hall debate on HGV Wheel Safety before making a number of interventions in debates on counter terrorism. On Friday I visited the Remploy factory in Wythenshawe where they were holding an open morning. I then joined the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, at an event organised by Parliament’s Education Service at the University of Manchester. Later in the day I attended the switch-on of the Christmas lights in Wythenshawe Civic Centre.
